Newsletter March 2005 - Book Reviews

  Crest

Welcome to 2005 and the first Book Reviews of the New Year. We have two books this month that Alasdair has kindly lent me.

Quality Equipment for the Keen Gardener. Delivered direct to your door.

The first book, or should I say brochure, is a greenhouse and gardening equipment catalogue.

Early Season 2005 issue, 68 pages.
To place an order with the company post to
Two Wests & Elliott Ltd,
Unit 4
Carrwood Road,
Sheepbridge Industrial Estate,
Chesterfield. Derbyshire, S41 9RH
Tel. 0870 444 8277
Postage and Packing is £4.95.

You can also visit and collect.

The items included range from the small item to the size of a greenhouse and include Greenhouses, Staging, Heating, Plant Protectors, Propagation, etc. A good idea to have a brochure to browse through at this time of year as you may be ready to replace certain items when the spring comes. There is a good selection of heaters both gas and electric, some expensive. I have not bought anything for some time now so have not kept up to date with prices. Some of these seem quite steep. Now you have an idea of prices you can compare the prices when out and about. There is always that Birthday present that you would like and what a good idea to leave the brochure open at the right page.

Yes I think one for the book box is a good idea.

An Introduction to SEMPERVIVUM and JOVIBARBA Species and Cultivars.

My second item up for review is a small handy little book on Sempervivum and Jovibarba.

Written and Published by Howard and Sally Wills.
First Published 2004. Cost - £3.50

Sempervivum book cover

What a pleasure to browse through the colourful 52 pages (soft back) when it is cold and snowing outside. We start with an introduction and history of the genera Sempervivum and Jovibarba. We move on to the plants’ structure, flowers and annual growth cycle and cultivation. Growing ideas such as staging in pots or planting in the gardens, I always think they look good in planters or pots on the patio. They are so colourful and they do not suffer much from pests. All the Sempervivum species are shown and many Sepervivum cultivars, also the same for Jovibarba and there’s a bit of information about each.

Further details can be obtained from the web site along with plant lists from Fernwood Nursery where they have over 1200 varieties available. This is a good little book to buy and maybe one for the library. Just my type of book easy to carry! No weight for the library box either!
