Newsletter March 2005 - Greenfingers Great Garden Quiz

Four intrepid Branch members put their heads together at Barton Grange Garden Centre on 10th March to be named the ‘TWO PRICKLY PAIRS’ quiz team. They were Alasdair Glen, Elizabeth Maddock, Julia Davenport and Harold Cooper, who on the last minute stood in for Peter Shakeshaft when the date of the Wilmslow Show meeting was changed. What a busy Branch !!

14 teams assembled. The winning team to go through to the regional finals. The winner of this to go through to Gardeners World Live at the NEC in June. All for the Greenfingers Appeal, a Charity which builds gardens for children’s hospices. Margaret Glen came along as our cheer leader. Margaret was amused to find she had been head hunted for a team with a member short. So she didn’t cheer us at all. There were 8 categories in the quiz each with 5 questions. Answers were written down and collected by the proficient Barton Grange staff who looked after us well all evening and laid on refreshments with Danish pastries.

There were no cactus questions but a good coverage of garden general knowledge was needed. Our star performer was definitely Elizabeth, followed by Alasdair. Julia organised team strategy and Harold kept us all in check. What a team !!

At the end of the evening we were delighted to find that our team came 5th out of 14. We all went home after a great fun evening with brain exhaustion and each competitor was given a lovely pot of miniature daffodils, compliments of Barton Grange as a memento. So who is going to be on the next year’s team ?
