![]() The branch's award-winning display at the Poynton Show Elizabeth’s very spectacular painted backdrop of cactus country which was displayed to the branch at the end of the August meeting made its debut at Poynton Show on Bank Holiday Saturday, 27th August. When a a selection of plants provided by Elizabeth herself, Julia and yours truly was added the resulting combination was good enough to obtain a Gold Medal Award (and £25 for the branch). This was particularly pleasing since we had only been awarded bronze previously. We had quite a lot of interested visitors and the usual variety of questions which we attempted to answer. It was good to have a chat with Colin Moss one of our members from a few years back, he might just start attending again. In addition, Julia met Heather Blake, one of our members from the seventies and early eighties. She was officiating in the equestrian section. As usual, it was an enjoyable show and we were made very welcome by the officials. There was a great variety of things to look at, to watch and, of course, to enter. In addition to prizes in the cactus and succulent classes, Julia won awards with potatoes and with herbs. Disappointing, however, was the overall poor number of entries in the six cactus and succulent classes. Can we do better in 2006? Alasdair Glen
