![]() Aloinopsis compactus From Our President Another year has sped by with its ups and downs, happy and sad times, highlights and everyday occasions, all of which make up our precious time on this planet. We celebrate 60 years and our Diamond Jubilee in this coming year, 2010. I feel privileged to be your President and to represent its founder member, my late husband. The branch came into being in 1950 when Norman, who up to this point travelled to Manchester for his hobby, decided a Macclesfield branch should be formed. I did not know him then. We met in 1962 when I was introduced to the "Prickly Horrors" as he referred to them. The spiny creatures were in his blood and my conversion to the succulent world was a case of "If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em". As a consequence I have experienced so much pleasure in so many ways, travelled to foreign parts, made many new friends and shared these fascinating plants with my friends here at home. The past year has been one of success whenever the branch has exhibited or competed at events. Here we must acknowledge the efforts of a group of enthusiastic members who have worked tirelessly on our behalf. Our branch is thriving at a time when others are struggling and this is due to commitment of our officials and committee members. However, this would be of no avail without you, our very loyal members. In August we sadly lost one of those loyal members namely Norman Williamson who passed away at the age of 93. His membership spanned many years and he had held both the office of Treasurer and President during that time. He still came to meetings and the show at the age of 92. It gives me great pleasure to welcome our newest and by far youngest member, Adam. It is a joy to have him with us each month. May 2010 be a truly memorable year. Season’s greetings to you all. — Sybil Wilbraham
